Federal Law Enforcement Training Center Information

The Federal Law Enforcement Training Center (FLETC) is an Interagency training organization for 90 Federal agencies, with trainers from diverse backgrounds, all professionals in their field. Law enforcement personnel from departments and agencies throughout the nation as well as from other countries receive special training in a variety of programs. The parent agency of the FLETC is the Department of Homeland Security. The organization’s main training center is located in Glynco, Georgia as well as two additional residential training sites in Artesia, New Mexico and Charleston, South Carolina. They also have a non-residential in-service re-qualification and advanced training facility in Cheltenham, Maryland.

The FLETC has a mixture of permanent faculty as well as short-term, detailed or recently retired staff which gives the organization its unique balance of field-based perspective and experience. Their featured programs include Criminal Investigator Training, Land Management Police Training, and Uniformed Police Training.

Some Basic Training Programs of the FLETC:

Basic Police Officer Training Program (BPOTP) Indian Police Academy.

The BPOTP is a Basic Police Training Program for U.S. Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA) and tribal law enforcement officer recruits hired through the BIA. The 16-week program includes instruction in Ethics and Conduct, Criminalistics, Conflict Management, Narcotics, Collection and Preservation of Evidence, Search and Seizure, Stress Officer Safety and Survival, Civil Rights, Detention and Arrest, Indian Country Law, and training unique to BIA needs.

Criminal Investigator Training Program (CITP) CITP provides training in the techniques, theories and methods of conducting criminal investigations. Training includes developing a case as well as writing reports, obtaining search warrants, interviewing witnesses and the use of surveillance and undercover operations as well as effective courtroom testimony.

Immigration and Customs Enforcement Deportation Integrated (ICED). ICED provides training in fundamental law enforcement topics including Immigration and Naturalization laws, Fingerprinting, Detection and Discovery of Contraband, Officer Liability, Interviewing, Cross-Cultural Communications, Detention Procedures, Arrest Techniques, Firearms Handling and Qualification. As these officers are hired through Homeland Security, this department has its own hiring requirements and standards.

Land management Police Training (LMPT)

LMPT is a basic training program for uniformed officers who enforce Federal laws on Federal and tribal lands and waters of the United States and its territories. Agencies include the Bureau of Land Management, Bureau of Indian Affairs, U.S. Forest Service, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA), National Park Service, National Marine Fisheries Service, Tribal Police and Department of Defense Law Enforcement Conservation Officers. These organizations and agencies are responsible for protecting our natural and cultural resources, public recreation facilities, as well as park visitors and residents on Federal and tribal lands.

Uniformed Police Training Program

The UPTP trains new Federal recruits in the basic law enforcement knowledge, skills and abilities needed for the critical first two years of the job. Officers are trained in Officer Safety and Survival, Physical Security, Arrest Techniques, Drugs of Abuse, Driver Training, Communications and Interviewing Techniques, Constitutional and Federal Criminal Law, Defensive Tactics, Firearms, Terrorism, Tactics for Flying Armed and VIP Protection.
